Two juveniles were taken into custody early Wednesday morning in North Charleston after police say they were part of a group attempting to break into vehicles in a residential neighborhood.
Reports of Suspicious Activity
According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers were first alerted around 3:30 a.m. when a resident on Celtic Drive reported seeing five to six individuals dressed in dark clothing. The group was allegedly looking into parked cars and pulling on door handles.
Shortly after, a second report placed the same group near Mixon Avenue. Witnesses noted that one of the suspects was wearing red pants, helping officers narrow their search.
Police Response and Pursuit
Officers eventually located the group near South Rhett Avenue and South Boulevard. As police approached, the suspects fled on foot, running through nearby backyards.
Authorities quickly set up a perimeter in the area in an effort to contain and locate those involved.
Juveniles Detained
During the search, officers apprehended two individuals—a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old—who were allegedly attempting to flee.
Both juveniles were later released to their parents under custodial agreements, with a requirement to appear in court at a later date.
Investigation Ongoing
Police say the investigation is still active as they work to identify and locate the remaining individuals involved.
The North Charleston Police Department is asking anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the case.
