Lowcountry community gathers following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, and SC lawmakers react.

On March 1, 2026, ~100 Lowcountry residents protested in Charleston’s Marion Square at 5 p.m. against U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran (“Operation Epic Fury”). Organized by Freedom Road Socialist Organization Charleston to oppose Trump’s “forever war.” Organizer Alfred Peeler highlighted redirecting funds from war to needs like asthma meds.

Strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; Trump urged Iranian people/military to rise up.

SC Republican Support

Local GOP leaders backed the action:

FigureKey Quote
AG Alan Wilson (NG vet)“Peace through strength… stand with Trump and troops. Iranian people, rise up.”
Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette“Trust Trump to prevent endless war, restore peace through strength.”
Rep. Nancy Mace“Iran slaughters own people… not time to attack Trump/soldiers. Freedom must win.”
Sen. Tim Scott“Trump acts… end to terror sponsor. Applaud Trump/Rubio for peace/defense.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham“Trump’s speech catalyst for historic ME change… liberation of Iran at hand.”

Democratic Opposition

  • Mac Deford (SC-1 Candidate): Trump reckless, no congressional OK—abuse of power, risks wider war. Demands strategy/accountability.
  • Rep. James Clyburn: Constitution requires Congress for war; risks repeating Iraq/Afghan failures. Urges alignment with framers’ intent.

Protests echo national divide: GOP sees decisive strength post-Iran threats/nuclear restart; Dems stress unauthorized escalation, troop risks. Charleston ties to your local news interest—any thoughts on SC leaders’ stances?
