Lithium batteries cause the garage fire on Sullivan's Island.

A detached garage fire occurred off Atlantic Avenue on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Firefighters, assisted by other agencies, quickly extinguished the blaze, limiting damage to the garage and its contents, including a golf cart. No injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Anthony Stith

Anthony Stith, Sullivan’s Island Fire Chief since 1982, determined the fire originated from lithium batteries in the golf cart. He began his career in 1974 with the Mount Pleasant Fire Department and leads the volunteer squad.

Lithium Battery Risks in Golf Carts

Lithium-ion batteries in golf carts can ignite due to thermal runaway from overcharging, damage, or poor storage, leading to intense fires hard to extinguish. Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere, like in Florida and Maryland garages.

Safety Recommendations

Use manufacturer-approved chargers and UL-certified batteries, such as LiFePO4 types with lower fire risk. Store and charge in open areas, use Class D extinguishers for fires, and avoid cheap aftermarket products.

Local Golf Cart Regulations

Sullivan’s Island requires golf carts to be registered with SCDMV, insured, and operated by licensed drivers aged 16+ on secondary roads under 35 mph during daylight. They are prohibited on major routes like Ben Sawyer Blvd.
