Jaxie Ferguson, a James Island‑based licensed master social worker and Democrat, has officially entered the race for Charleston County Council District 9. She is challenging the seat currently held by Jenny Costa Honeycutt, who is running for Congress, in a district that covers parts of James Island, Johns Island, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, and Folly Beach.
What she is focusing on
In her campaign announcement on March 19, Ferguson said flooding, rapid development, infrastructure, and rising living‑cost pressures are top concerns for the county’s island communities. She describes these areas as being “at a crossroads” and stresses that residents need a council member who will listen, push for accountable county government, and advocate for smart growth and stronger infrastructure.
Her background and qualifications
Ferguson earned a psychology degree from the College of Charleston and a master’s in social work from the University of South Carolina, and she works as a certified case manager focused on children and families in the Lowcountry. Her professional background in social services informs her campaign messaging about accessibility, equity, and protecting natural resources while managing growth in the barrier‑island communities she hopes to represent.
