The City of Isle of Palms is inviting the community to a public meeting on Wednesday, May 22 at 5 PM, held at the Isle of Palms Recreation Center (24 28th Avenue). This session will provide residents and stakeholders an opportunity to learn more about a proposed shoal management project aimed at addressing erosion challenges at the island’s north end.
What’s the Project About?
The proposed plan focuses on harvesting sand from either an incoming shoal or from accretional areas between 44th and 53rd Avenue, if the shoal isn’t accessible. This sand would then be recycled to areas experiencing erosion, helping to stabilize the shoreline as part of a broader sediment management strategy.
Why It Matters
This initiative serves as a cost-effective and sustainable interim solution to combat erosion. It’s designed to extend the effectiveness of large-scale beach nourishments, offering significant long-term savings while preserving the island’s natural beauty.
When Will Construction Start?
If permits are approved, construction is expected to begin in late 2024 or early 2025.
