An investigation is ongoing after an inmate was found dead at the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Monday afternoon. Deputies responded to reports of an unresponsive inmate shortly before 3 p.m., according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. Despite efforts to assist, the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coroner’s Office Yet to Identify the Deceased
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the deceased inmate. Sheriff Carl Ritchie has requested an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the agency’s Office of Professional Standards has launched an internal review, in accordance with standard protocol for such incidents.
Emergency Response Assistance
The North Charleston Fire Department and Charleston County EMS provided initial response and assistance at the scene.
