Hanahan's mayor and council member are under investigation by the state for ethics.

The South Carolina Ethics Commission has launched an official investigation into complaints filed against Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater and City Council Member Michael Sally.

The investigation centers on allegations that both officials failed to properly disclose conflicts of interest related to city real estate transactions.

Allegations Involving Real Estate Deals

According to the complaints, Rainwater and Sally were involved in land deals that resulted in commissions being paid to Carolina One Real Estate, where both officials work as agents outside of their elected positions.

Documents and internal emails released in January reportedly showed both officials participating behind the scenes in Hanahan real estate matters. The complaints allege that their dual roles as public officials and real estate agents created conflicts of interest that were not properly disclosed.

The situation has prompted concern among residents in the close-knit Hanahan community, with some questioning whether the leaders’ actions crossed ethical boundaries.

Possible Consequences and Next Steps

While the Ethics Commission has the authority to investigate and impose fines, it does not have the power to remove elected officials from office. Only the governor of South Carolina holds that authority.

Previously, the commission stated it could neither confirm nor deny the existence of a complaint. However, copies of letters from the agency confirm that investigations into both Rainwater and Sally are underway. Neither official has publicly responded to requests for comment regarding the investigation.
