A financial fraud case in Moncks Corner has raised concerns about trust and responsibility within recovery communities. A woman holding a key role in a shared living home has been arrested after an investigation into missing funds.
Treasurer Arrested in Forgery Case
In Moncks Corner, South Carolina, 63-year-old Brenda Carol Byrd was arrested by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. She is facing serious charges, including breach of trust involving more than $2,000 and forgery of less than $10,000.
The case came to light after officials received a complaint about missing checks from an Oxford House in Goose Creek.
Missing Checks Led to Investigation
Deputies were called on Tuesday to meet with a representative from the Oxford House. They also spoke with the person who reported the issue and collected important details.
During the investigation, officers found that several checks and check stubs were missing. This raised suspicion and led to a deeper probe into the financial records.
Nine Forged Checks Discovered
Investigators later found copies of nine checks that were allegedly forged. These checks were made payable to Brenda Carol Byrd.
After reviewing the evidence, authorities concluded that the checks had been forged and used by her. The total amount taken from the Oxford House was reported to be $2,800.72, over a period from February to March.
Role of Treasurer Gave Access
Byrd was living at the Oxford House as part of a recovery program. She was also serving as the treasurer, which gave her access to the house’s finances.
Oxford Houses are shared homes where people recovering from addiction live together. These homes focus on maintaining sobriety and supporting each other in a structured and safe environment.
The checkbook was kept in a locked filing cabinet, but Byrd had access to it because of her role.
Taken Into Custody
After gathering enough evidence, deputies arrested Byrd. She was taken to the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, where she was booked.
The case highlights how misuse of trust can impact communities that are built on support and accountability.
