Roots in Charleston
Betty’s story began in 1924 on Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston. She went to local schools that are no longer around, like Memminger High School. She was a bright student, although she admits that she eventually got a bit “distracted.”
She left the University of South Carolina during World War II and returned to Charleston, where she married David Lancer. They were married for 45 years until his passing.
A Life of Family and Service
Betty and David raised three children — two daughters and a son — and her family has since grown to include five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Professionally, she worked at a Charleston law firm for 25 years.
In 1975, she moved to Sullivan’s Island, where she’s lived ever since. Over the decades, Betty has built a life filled with family, work, community, and lots of laughter.
