The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirmed Monday night that it is looking into an officer-involved shooting in North Charleston.
According to a news release from the North Charleston Police Department, the investigation began around 7:00 p.m. when an off-duty police officer working security at Walmart, located at 7400 Rivers Ave., was notified by store associates about an alleged fraudulent return.
The store personnel then requested that the individual be placed on a trespass notice and removed from the premises.
As the officer spoke with the staff, the suspect became aware of the situation and attempted to flee. The officer then pursued the suspect, who fled via an emergency door. According to a police news release, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun during the chase.
According to police, the officer responded to the threat by shooting at the suspect, hitting them. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The severity of the suspect’s injuries is currently unknown.
The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the SLED investigation, according to law enforcement.
This is the 32nd officer-involved shooting of the year in South Carolina. In 2024, there were 45. This is the North Charleston Police Department’s second officer-involved shooting of 2025. The previous year, the agency had five.
