Charleston County Democrats held their county convention on Johns Island this past weekend to energize voters and candidates ahead of the June 9 midterm elections. Party leaders say the event was designed to connect voters across the county with local, state, and federal Democratic candidates and to highlight Democratic “value issues” such as education, health care, and voting rights.
What the convention aimed to do
Charleston County Democratic Party Chairman Thomas Dixon emphasized that the convention was open to all residents and aimed to raise awareness about Democratic candidates and the party’s platform. He stressed turning out voters in a midterm cycle, saying the goal is to elect Democrats to office and “support our value system throughout the nation.”
Party strategy and outlook
With South Carolina largely under Republican control for decades, Dixon said the party is focusing on voter education, momentum‑building, and reclaiming ground in legislative and statewide races. He argued that Charleston County is not a “red state” and described rising enthusiasm among Democrats, framing the political moment as a “blue go” rather than a “red stop sign.”
