A $600,000 settlement has resolved a lawsuit against Berkeley County, South Carolina, over a fatal 2020 car crash that killed Chad, Andrea, and Meredith Freeman at the intersection of Nexton Parkway and Brighton Park Boulevard. The suit alleged poor visibility from a median and trees, lack of traffic signals, and county negligence in ignoring a known “pray and go” hazard.
Crash Circumstances
On October 11, 2020, the Freemans were turning left onto Brighton Park Boulevard when an oncoming vehicle struck them head-on. No lights, signals, or roundabout existed, and the county allegedly failed to address community-reported dangers despite control over nearby road work.
Legal Resolution
Filed in May 2022, the complaint cited negligence, gross negligence, and recklessness as direct causes under the South Carolina Transportation Tort Claims Act, capping recovery at $600,000 via the Insurance Reserve Fund. The case was dismissed post-settlement, with terms undisclosed.
