Charleston City Councilmember Stephen Bowden announced plans for a new Aldi grocery store in the “The Wedge” development at West Ashley Circle. Residents have shown strong support, citing easier access without long drives to other locations.
Development Details
The store will anchor the site at the corner of Bees Ferry Road, Glenn McConnell Parkway, and West Ashley Circle, with space for additional tenants designed to avoid a strip-mall look. No residential units are planned, focusing instead on retail like a grocery and restaurant options.
Community Reactions
Many locals expressed excitement on Bowden’s Facebook post, calling it the “perfect spot.” Concerns arose about traffic near the Walmart and road infrastructure, with Bowden noting efforts for a referendum to fund improvements, including a potential flyover at Magwood.
Environmental Notes
Wetlands are not an issue due to the site’s higher elevation, with detention areas planned as mitigation. Native trees will be preserved, marked in development illustrations. Construction awaits final approvals and is not imminent.
