A cooperative effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies in Berkeley County led to the arrest of a man accused of attempting to illegally purchase a firearm.
Arrest Following Gun Purchase Attempt
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old Mauricio Melendez-Bangas was taken into custody on April 9 after authorities say he attempted to buy a Glock 19 handgun.
Officials say a background check revealed he was prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm, prompting involvement from federal agents.
Multi-Agency Investigation
The case came to the attention of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Task Force.
Authorities say the investigation uncovered that Melendez-Bangas was also facing a pending grand larceny charge tied to a March 31 incident in Berkeley County.
Traffic Stop and Arrest
Deputies assigned to the Berkeley County ICE Task Force located Melendez-Bangas leaving his residence around 8:26 a.m.
He was stopped at the intersection of Gerrardstown Road and Henshaw Road and taken into custody without incident.
Charges and Custody Status
Melendez-Bangas was transported to the courthouse to address the outstanding felony charge and is currently being held at Eastern Regional Jail.
Officials say he is also subject to an immigration detainer.

The sheriff’s office credited the arrest to coordination among local, state, and federal agencies.
Authorities say they will continue working with federal partners to address cases involving illegal firearm attempts and other criminal activity, emphasizing a focus on public safety.
