A man was arrested in North Charleston on Sunday after he was found attempting to hide drugs during a jail intake process. According to the North Charleston Police Department, the arrest happened after officers spotted the man trying to hide in a breezeway at the Econo Lodge on Northside Drive, an area known for increased drug activity.
Details of the Arrest
While patrolling the area, officers approached the man and noticed the strong smell of marijuana. This led them to conduct a probable cause search. The search revealed a powdery white substance in one of the man’s socks, which later tested positive for cocaine.
The man, identified as 42-year-old Derrell Chandler, was arrested and taken to the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. Once there, he denied having any more drugs on him. However, during a routine strip search, officers found that Chandler had attempted to hide and swallow a small baggie from his underwear. The bag contained a blue rock-like substance, which later tested positive for fentanyl.
Charges and Legal Consequences
Chandler now faces serious charges, including possession of fentanyl (more than two grains), possession of cocaine, and furnishing contraband at a municipal detention facility. His actions while being processed into the jail are being investigated as part of the ongoing legal process.
Investigation and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The North Charleston Police Department continues to investigate the situation, and Derrell Chandler is currently being held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. His charges highlight the ongoing issue of drug-related crimes in the area.
