A tragic accident occurred Friday evening in downtown Summerville, South Carolina, when a freight train struck and killed a pedestrian near a busy crossing.

Incident Details

The Summerville Police Department reported that the collision happened around 7:26 p.m. at the Main Street crossing near the Summerville Museum.

An eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train, headed toward Charleston, struck the pedestrian, who was walking on the tracks at the time.

Authorities confirmed the pedestrian died at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released.

Community Reaction

The crash brought an eerie pause to the downtown area. Local musician Darrell Butcher, who was performing nearby at the Wine and Tapas Bar, recalled the unsettling scene:

“It was a very eerie feeling… I didn’t want to be insensitive to whatever had happened, although we didn’t know what had happened, but had obvious suspicions.”

Aftermath

The intersection at Main Street and Cedar Street was temporarily shut down during the investigation but has since reopened.

Police confirmed that the freight train crew was not injured. The incident remains under investigation.
