NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A 32-year-old man with prior felony convictions has been arrested on multiple drug and firearm charges following a traffic stop in North Charleston, police said.

Traffic Stop Leads to Search

On Wednesday, officers with the North Charleston Police Department were patrolling the Highway 78 and Blue House Road area when they spotted a vehicle making an illegal U-turn at a marked intersection.

The driver pulled into the parking lot of the Home2 Suites, where officers approached the vehicle.

Marijuana Odor Prompts Vehicle Search

According to police, the smell of marijuana coming from the car gave officers probable cause to search it. Inside, they found a large amount of green plant material, a box of clear plastic bags, and a handgun in the glovebox.

Officers also recovered a digital scale and cash from the center console.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Police identified the driver as Davon Rashard Wilson, 32. Court records show Wilson is prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous felony convictions, including involuntary manslaughter.

He was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm by a person unlawfully, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
