A man from Summerville is being charged with several offenses for running a business without a license.

John Travis Peterson, 38, from Summerville, faces multiple charges from the South Carolina Department of Revenue for operating Cane Bay Tire and Auto LLC without a retail license after its revocation in June 2025.

Charges Filed

Peterson was arrested on four counts of furnishing a false tax document, plus one count each of operating without a retail license, making a threat, and simple assault. Court documents indicate he continued retail sales post-revocation and provided false information to SCDOR employees during follow-up visits.​

Incident Background

When SCDOR agents delivered revocation orders, Peterson allegedly used a fake name on documents, threatened an employee, and assaulted them to force departure from the property. The case will be prosecuted in Berkeley County.​

Conviction on false tax document charges carries up to one year in prison and $5,000 fines per count. Assault, threat, and unlicensed operation charges each risk up to 30 days in jail and fines ranging from $200 to $5,000.
