A Charleston-area man is celebrating a life-changing windfall after winning the largest Pick 4 payout ever awarded to a single player in the South Carolina Education Lottery.
The Winning Numbers
The lucky winner, who chose not to reveal his identity, hit it big in the midday Pick 4 drawing earlier this month, claiming a total prize of $811,000.
He told lottery officials he had a strong hunch about the numbers 1-7-3-1 and decided to test his luck. Instead of playing once, he spread his chances across 162 tickets, spending $339 in total. Almost all of his wagers were placed straight, meaning the numbers had to match the exact order drawn — odds of just 1 in 10,000.
His gamble paid off in historic fashion.
Not the Only Winner
The man wasn’t the only one who trusted the number combination. Another customer at the same store — the Towne Center Market — overheard his choice and also decided to play 1-7-3-1. That ticket-holder walked away with $25,400.
“I was excited, of course,” the big winner said, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.
A Historic Payout
This marks the largest Pick 4 prize won by a single player in South Carolina lottery history. For comparison, most Pick 4 winners typically take home between $2,500 and $5,000 per ticket. By multiplying his wagers across so many entries, the Charleston man turned one lucky hunch into an extraordinary win.
From a gut feeling on the numbers 1-7-3-1 to a record-breaking $811,000 payday, this Lowcountry man proved that sometimes taking a bold chance pays off. While he plans to keep his identity private, his story is already making waves as one of the most remarkable Pick 4 wins the state has ever seen.
