ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. — A shocking discovery in the Homeland Park area has led to an ongoing investigation by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office after human skeletal remains were found near a creek on Sunday.
Discovery Made by Children
The incident came to light around 12:38 p.m. when deputies were called to a creek after children playing nearby found what appeared to be bones. At first, the children thought the remains might belong to an animal, but the situation became serious when they later discovered a skull.
Their mother quickly informed authorities, leading to an immediate response from law enforcement.
Investigation Begins at the Scene
Soon after the report, detectives, forensic teams, and the coroner’s office reached the location to examine the area. Officials confirmed that the skull found in the creek was human. As the investigation continued, more remains were uncovered from the site, making the case more complex and raising several questions.
More Human Bones Found
During the search, officials found around 45 to 50 additional human bones in the same area. According to the coroner, the bones appeared to be quite old and heavily weathered. There were also signs, such as plant roots growing around the remains, which suggest that the bones had been there for many years.
Not a Recent Case
Experts believe that the remains are not recent. The coroner shared that the condition of the bones indicates they could be over ten years old, although this is only an estimate at this stage. The natural surroundings and the state of the remains point towards long-term exposure in the environment.
Cause of Death Still Unknown
At present, officials have not been able to determine how the person died. There were no visible fractures found on the skull, and investigators have not confirmed whether foul play was involved. The case remains open, and more detailed analysis is required to understand what happened.
Experts to Assist Investigation
To get clearer answers, an anthropologist from Clemson will join the investigation. This expert will help study the bones in detail and may provide important clues about the identity of the person and the possible cause of death. Such scientific examination is important in cases where remains are old and difficult to analyse.
