Juneteenth, celebrated every year on June 19, is an important holiday in the United States, marking the day when over 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Recognized as a federal holiday since 2021, this day honors the end of slavery in America. This year, Juneteenth falls on Thursday, June 19, and as with other national holidays, it will impact services such as banks, post offices, and shipping. Here’s everything you need to know to plan ahead:
Are Banks Open on Juneteenth?
Banks across the United States will be closed on Juneteenth since it is a federal holiday, and the Federal Reserve—which regulates the banking system—shuts down on all national holidays. This includes major banks and credit unions.
- Wells Fargo will close its 5,600 branches across the country.
- Chase will close its 4,700 branches in the U.S.
- CitiBank, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, and Capital One will also close their doors.
- Note: Capital One Cafes will remain open, so check for cafe-specific hours.
Though physical branches will be closed, online banking and ATMs will remain accessible for customers to use. If you need to visit a branch, be sure to take care of banking tasks before Thursday or plan for an online transaction.
Are Postal Services Available on Juneteenth?
Most postal services will be unavailable on Juneteenth as the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) observes the federal holiday:
- USPS Post Offices: All post offices will be closed on June 19, and there will be no regular mail deliveries for the day.
- Priority Mail Express: This service will still operate, as it runs year-round, 365 days a year.
- UPS: UPS will remain open for pickup and delivery services on Juneteenth, and all services will run as normal.
- FedEx: FedEx will also be operating on June 19, maintaining normal pickup and delivery services.
If you’re planning to mail a package, make sure to handle your business before Thursday or use Priority Mail Express with USPS for guaranteed delivery during the holiday.
Important Reminders for Shoppers and Services
While banks and USPS will be closed, UPS and FedEx are maintaining operations, so keep these in mind if you’re expecting packages or need shipping services on Juneteenth.
Also, a reminder: some banks are facing permanent closures due to challenges in the banking industry. Bank of America has confirmed it will close 19 branches in 2025, and another bank is shutting down 13 locations. Be sure to stay updated on branch closures, especially if your local branch is affected.
- Banks: Closed nationwide (Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America, Citi, PNC, Capital One, and others).
- USPS: Closed with no regular mail delivery, but Priority Mail Express is available.
- UPS and FedEx: Open for regular pickup and delivery services.
If you need to run errands that involve banking or mailing packages, plan ahead to avoid any disruptions caused by the Juneteenth holiday.
