Woman Accused of Stabbing Tourist in New York City Macy's Bathroom Was Released from Psychiatric Hospital Hours Before Attack

Kerri Aherne, a 43-year-old from Massachusetts, faces charges of attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering a child after allegedly stabbing a 39-year-old California tourist at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City on December 11, 2025. The attack occurred around 3:15 p.m. on the seventh-floor bathroom, where the victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her back and a laceration to her arm while changing her baby, who fell unharmed.

Defendant’s Background

Prosecutors revealed Aherne was released from a Manhattan psychiatric ward that morning after a year-long stay. She reportedly bought a knife at the store, claiming voices commanded her to kill or be killed. Her history includes a 2018 arrest for threatening Sen. Elizabeth Warren online, leading to a 2019 court ruling of incapacity, guardianship by family, and a schizophrenia treatment plan.

Court Proceedings

During her December 12 arraignment, Aherne was held without bail. She expressed aversion to further hospitalization, preferring prison, and referenced unhelpful prior care. Her next court date is December 17. The victim was discharged from the hospital and reported as improving.
