Olivia Clendenin, a 34-year-old Ohio woman, has been sentenced to 16 to 20 years in prison after being convicted for opening fire on a house party, injuring a random guest.
The shooting took place in January 2024, following Clendenin’s anger at her estranged husband and his new boyfriend for attending the same New Year’s Eve party.
The Shooting Incident
Clendenin’s actions were fueled by jealousy and anger after spotting her estranged husband and his new boyfriend at a party in Clearcreek Township.
After leaving the party in frustration, she returned around 5 a.m. in her mother’s 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Clendenin drove through the front yard of the house and opened fire, targeting the house where the party was being held.
A 29-year-old guest, Daniel Johnson, was standing on the porch when he was shot in the abdomen. Johnson, who was an innocent bystander, had been invited to the party and was just minding his business when the shooting occurred.
At the sentencing, he expressed how his life changed forever due to the actions of someone who was angry over a personal dispute.
“I had been invited over and was sitting on the porch minding my business,” Johnson said. “The defendant was attempting to shoot at someone else, and I was the one who ended up being shot.”
Clendenin’s Arrest and Conviction
After the shooting, Clendenin fled the scene, crashing her mother’s vehicle while attempting to escape. Police later arrested her at the crash site. She was initially released on bail and placed under electronic home detention before being sentenced.
In early February 2024, Clendenin was convicted by a Warren County jury on multiple charges, including two counts of felonious assault, discharging a firearm into a home, and attempted murder. Prosecutors emphasized that although she intended to harm someone specific, her reckless actions almost killed an innocent victim.
“Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell stated, ‘Clendenin may have started 2025 as a free person, but will spend the rest of 2026 and at a minimum the decade thereafter incarcerated for attempted murder,'” he told reporters.
Statement from the Defendant
At her sentencing, Clendenin expressed remorse, stating, “I care deeply about my family, my friends, my business, and those who rely on me in this world.”
She also expressed relief that Daniel Johnson, the victim, was recovering from his injuries. “I truly hope that he has a great future and I wish him nothing but the best in his future,” Clendenin added.
Impact on the Victim
Daniel Johnson spoke at the sentencing, sharing how his life was impacted by Clendenin’s actions. Though he was not the intended target, he was seriously injured when a bullet struck him.
His experience serves as a stark reminder of how a moment of anger can lead to irreversible consequences for innocent people.
