A North Carolina father of 11 was tragically killed in a shooting while holding his infant child, authorities said, in an incident that remains under investigation.
Shooting Occurred Outside Family Home
According to the Plymouth Police Department, 36-year-old Devonelle Brimage was shot in the early hours of April 2 in the area of Latham Avenue in Plymouth.
Police responded to the scene around 1:34 a.m. and found Brimage inside a vehicle parked in the driveway of his residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Infant Injured but Survives
Brimage was in the vehicle with 38-year-old Avione Linquad Webb and an 8-month-old child, identified as Brimage’s baby.
Authorities said the infant sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before later being released.
Webb, who also suffered gunshot wounds, was initially transported to Washington Regional Medical Center and later transferred to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for further care.
Family Describes Final Act of Protection
According to local officials cited by media reports, Brimage was holding the child when the shooting occurred. The baby’s mother said he was cradling the infant at the time he was fatally shot.
A fundraiser created to support Brimage’s family described his final moments as an act of protection.
“In his final moments, he showed incredible courage and love—using his own body to shield and protect his 8-month-old baby,” the fundraiser stated.
Investigation Ongoing
The shooting remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet released information about suspects or a possible motive.
The Plymouth Police Department has not provided additional details as of April 11.
