A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Madbury, New Hampshire, where a mother fatally shot her husband and two children before taking her own life. The family’s youngest child, a toddler, was found unharmed inside the home and is now in the care of relatives, according to state officials.
What Happened in Madbury
On August 18, authorities say Emily Long, 34, shot and killed her husband, Ryan Long, 48, along with their two children, Parker, 8, and Ryan, 6, before dying by suicide.
When investigators entered the home, they discovered the couple’s youngest child alive and physically unharmed. Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati confirmed that the toddler is now being cared for by extended family.
Family Struggles Before the Tragedy
Neighbors and friends revealed that Ryan Long had been diagnosed with brain cancer, a devastating illness that had deeply affected the household.
Emily Long often spoke publicly about her family’s struggles on her now-private TikTok page. In her bio, she described herself as a “Brain Cancer Wife” and referred to the account as a “personal diary” that was “cheaper than therapy.”
In her final post, Emily admitted to being in a “rut” and feeling depressed, but said she was trying to stay strong for her family:
“I’m making a point to get out of my depression and do this for my family.”
Authorities Urge Caution Against Speculation
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office urged the public not to assume the tragedy was caused by one single issue.
“While investigators are becoming aware of various concerns/issues ongoing in the household at the time of the event in question, people should avoid speculating that this event was caused by a single reason or stressor,” the office stated.
