Betty Broderick has been in prison for the past 30 years for murdering her ex-husband and his new wife.
Betty and Dan Broderick appeared to have the perfect existence until the terrible double killing on November 5, 1989, and the ugly divorce that preceded it. He was a successful medical malpractice lawyer, and Betty stayed at home with their four children. They owned a lovely home in San Diego and were well-known in the city’s top social circles.
However, their marriage was fraught with conflict, according to Betty’s 2015 memoir, Telling On Myself. In the early 1980s, Dan began an affair with Linda Kolkena, a 20-something receptionist he had hired as his legal assistant. Betty had early suspicions about the relationship, which Dan often denied. He eventually chose to leave Betty and file for divorce in 1985.
Dan’s connections in the local legal community allegedly provided him an advantage in court, which Betty compared to the Los Angeles Times as “putting a housewife in the ring with Muhammad Ali.”
Betty shot and killed Dan and Linda in their bed on November 5, 1989, apparently frustrated after losing custody of her children and witnessing her ex-husband sell their family home for no profit to her.
So, where is Betty Broderick today? Here’s all you need to know about the double murder she committed and what happened afterwards.
Who is Betty Broderick?
Betty was born in 1947 and raised in Westchester County, just outside of New York City. According to Telling On Myself, she was up in a strict Catholic environment and attended religious schools alongside her four brothers.
Betty wrote that her parents prepared her to be a housewife; she often cared for her youngest sibling and other neighborhood children. Betty then dabbled in modeling and found work at a local restaurant and department store.
After graduation, she enrolled at Mount Saint Vincent University in 1965, where she studied English and early childhood education.
How did Betty and Dan Broderick meet?
According to Esquire, Dan and Betty met while she was visiting Indiana for a University of Notre Dame football game. She was 17 years old at the time, and he was in his early twenties and about to start medical school at Cornell University.
Dan moved to New York City to start school, and the two reconnected. They rapidly grew close and continued to date on and off throughout Betty’s undergraduate career.
“He was highly ambitious, intelligent, and hilarious. And I am all three things. We shared a similar background. “We both wanted the same things for the future,” Betty told the Los Angeles Times. “I just wanted to be a mommy. He promised me the moon. “The guy asked me to marry him every day for three years.”
