Murrells Inlet, South Carolina According to documents obtained by WMBF News, a man acknowledged to starting drinking hours before a crash that killed an employee of Horry County Schools.
Camerino Antonio Hernandez, 39, has been charged by the South Carolina Highway Patrol with the death of Elizabeth Coss in a crash on September 30.
Lindsay Williams, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official, confirmed Wednesday that Hernandez is illegally in the United States from Mexico.
According to Hernandez’s arrest warrants, a witness saw a van run onto the sidewalk and struck Coss on Highway 707 near Starbucks Lake Road.
The witness followed the van to a neighboring parking lot and observed the driver, identified as Hernandez, receiving medical attention.
According to the warrants, when conversing with Hernandez, troopers noticed “an odor of an alcoholic beverage” flowing from him, as well as watery, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.
Hernandez then proceeded to the hospital, where he told one trooper that he had been drinking since 6 a.m., the warrants say. The crash occurred at 4:25 p.m.
Hernandez is accused with felony driving under the influence, resulting in death, and driving without a license.
Horry County Schools acknowledged that Coss worked as a paraprofessional at St. James High School.
She was hired in 2021.
According to jail records, no bond was issued for his charges. As of this writing, he was still being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
