Georgia – Twan Maurice Byrd faces several felony charges, including hijacking, attempted murder, and aggravated battery, after prosecutors say he stole his wife’s Chevy Equinox and attacked her in February. Byrd, whose age was not publicly available, was indicted on Wednesday after being arrested in connection with the violent incident.
Incident Details
On February 3, authorities say Byrd stole his wife’s SUV and proceeded to hit her multiple times with the vehicle. According to the bill of indictment, witnesses reported seeing Byrd try to run over his wife on a curb and later back over her before she fled to a nearby car wash.
Once there, Byrd allegedly hit her again with the vehicle before leaving the scene on foot, leaving his wife severely injured. Witnesses said the victim was found bleeding heavily from her nose and mouth and had suffered a broken leg.
Alleged Domestic Violence and Additional Charges
In addition to hitting his wife with the SUV, authorities say Byrd strangled her and struck her in the face during the attack. She was able to identify him as the attacker before being taken to the hospital. Prosecutors also stated that her injuries to the right leg were seriously disfiguring.
Further investigation revealed that Byrd allegedly tried to prevent his wife from testifying in their ongoing divorce proceedings in Chatham County’s Superior Court. He allegedly offered to give her whatever she wanted in exchange for not testifying against him. Additionally, he is accused of stalking her, having made harassing and intimidating phone calls.
Felony Charges
Byrd now faces a range of felony charges, including:
Hijacking a motor vehicle
Criminal attempt to commit murder
Kidnapping
