Abbeville County, South Carolina. Officials have detained a third suspect in connection with two gunshots that occurred at South Carolina State University in early October.
According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), 19-year-old Jamarion Jabari Jones of Abbeville was charged with carrying a weapon on school property on Thursday. Jones is accused of having an assault-style firearm in his backpack when the shootings occurred.
On Monday, investigators posted a photo of Jones and asked the public for assistance in identifying him as a person of interest in the SLED investigation. He remains in the Orangeburg County Detention Center and will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
On October 4, the university was placed under lockdown following two shootings at an on-campus homecoming party following a football game.
Officials canceled all subsequent homecoming celebrations throughout the weekend.
Jaliyah Butler, 19, was murdered in one of the gunshots, while another man was severely injured. State investigators believe the shootings were unrelated.
SLED agents initially arrested Matthew Daniel McCory, 18, on October 5 on counts of aiming and exhibiting a pistol at a person and carrying a weapon on school grounds.
SLED also charged another suspect in connection with Tuesday’s shooting. Treveion James Crawford, 18, has been charged with carrying a weapon on school property. He is accused of having a firearm on his person at the time of the shooting.
