Two football players from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) were injured after allegedly being stabbed by a teammate this weekend.
The alleged stabbing occurred on campus at the college’s Football Operations Center on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. local time, according to the Associated Press, NBC News, and WVTM 13 News.
Two football players were rushed to the hospital in stable condition, while a teammate was arrested, according to media reports.
Daniel Mincey, a UAB player, has subsequently been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on November 22, according to county records obtained by PEOPLE.
The identity of the two wounded players have yet to be made public.
A UAB official told the New York Post, “There is no threat to the campus.”
The spokesman noted how the school’s squad chose to continue playing their game, saying, “UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students.”
According to an NBC News spokesman, the two injured players “are in stable condition.”
“Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover,” according to the representative.
Looking back on how the UAB football team finished their scheduled game against the University of South Florida despite the event, head coach Alex Mortensen stated during a news conference, “We spoke with the team, and those guys really wanted to play today.”
“And really, the conversation went back to the seniors, you know, with it being senior day, they wanted to go play for them,” he told me.
“We want to be very sympathetic to what everyone’s going through and make sure everyone understood they had an opportunity to seek counseling or anything that they needed or wanted that the university is here to help them,” Mortensen talked about.
