A deeply disturbing case from Indiana has led to serious criminal charges after the death of a young child with special needs. The incident has raised strong concerns about neglect and the responsibility of caregivers.
Mother and Boyfriend Charged in Child’s Death
A 4-year-old boy, Malichi Lovely, was found unresponsive inside a basement closet at a home in Indianapolis. His mother, Angel Lovely, 37, and her boyfriend, Nicholas Bergdoll, 36, have both been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
The case is being investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Child Found in Closet With Severe Conditions
Police responded to the home on March 23 after receiving a call about an unresponsive child. When officers arrived, they found the mother attempting CPR on Malichi. He was rushed to Riley Children’s Health, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to court documents, the child was found in a cluttered basement closet where he was often kept. Investigators described the area as filled with stored items, indicating it was not a suitable living space.
Details From Investigation
Authorities revealed that Malichi had serious medical conditions, including cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, and required constant care. Reports also indicated that he was underweight and had previously shown signs of malnutrition.
Witness statements from his siblings suggested that he was regularly kept in the closet and did not receive proper attention. One child reportedly said he was “trapped” in the small room.
On the day of the incident, one sibling heard choking or gagging sounds coming from the closet before leaving for school. Later, another sibling discovered Malichi unresponsive with blood visible around his mouth.
Statements From the Accused
According to investigators, Angel Lovely admitted that she sometimes placed the child in the closet when he was crying, saying she needed time to calm down. Meanwhile, Nicholas Bergdoll claimed he was unaware of the situation and did not intervene.
Authorities are still waiting for the official cause and manner of death from the coroner’s office.
History of Concerns
The investigation also revealed that Malichi had previously been removed from his mother’s care due to concerns about neglect but was later returned. This has added to questions about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the tragedy.
Legal Status
Both Angel Lovely and Nicholas Bergdoll are currently being held at the Marion County Jail. Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 30.
