Fresh trouble has put golf legend Tiger Woods back in the headlines, as a new DUI charge has brought renewed focus on his long and complicated history with prescription medications and past crashes.
Latest Crash Leads to DUI Charge
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods was involved in a crash on Jupiter Island around 2 p.m. Authorities say he was allegedly under the influence of some type of medication or drug when his Land Rover flipped.
Police reported that Woods attempted to overtake a flatbed truck at a high speed but swerved to avoid another vehicle, ultimately clipping the truck and causing the SUV to roll. He was not injured in the crash.
No Alcohol Detected, But Signs of Impairment
Officers noted that Woods appeared unusually lethargic at the scene. However, a breath test showed no presence of alcohol. Investigators believe medication or another substance may have played a role, though no drugs were immediately found in the vehicle.
He has been charged with driving under the influence, along with other related offences, and is currently being held in custody.
History of Prescription Drug Issues
This latest incident has once again highlighted Woods’ past struggles with prescription medication. In 2017, he was arrested after being found asleep behind the wheel of his car. At that time, he later admitted that a combination of medications — including painkillers and sleep aids — had affected him.
He entered a diversion program following that incident and also sought treatment to address his dependence on such medications.
Earlier Crashes and Personal Challenges
Woods has faced multiple high-profile crashes over the years. In 2009, he crashed his vehicle outside his home during a period of intense personal controversy. Reports later indicated he had been under the influence of sleeping medication at the time.
In 2021, he was involved in a serious accident in California that left him with severe leg injuries and required major surgery. Unlike earlier incidents, no substance use was suspected in that crash.
Impact on Career and Public Image
Despite being one of the most successful golfers in history, with 15 major titles and numerous tournament wins, incidents like these have repeatedly affected Woods’ public image. His return to the sport has often been overshadowed by personal and legal issues.
