The search for a suspect continues after a man was shot at the State University of New York at Morrisville, prompting a campus lockdown.
Police officers came to SUNY Morrisville’s South Hall, one of the campus’ residential buildings, at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, in response to a complaint of a person shot, according to a statement from the New York State Police.
Around the same moment, the college went into lockdown and announced that all evening classes would be canceled.
“Students who are currently enrolled in classes must remain in place. Please remain in your current location until the lockdown is removed,” according to a university statement on X.
After NYSP troopers arrived, a 20-year-old boy who is not a SUNY Morrisville student was discovered with a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim was taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment.
According to the NYSP, no other people were hurt in the event, and there have been no reports of more victims.
The NYSP later stated that there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the university.
On Monday afternoon, SUNY Morrisville reported on its website that the shelter-in-place order had been withdrawn for the entire campus, with the exception of Onondaga and South Hall.
The university encouraged occupants of Onondaga and South Hall to stay in their residence halls until informed otherwise by law enforcement, as they will be searching the buildings and remaining on campus all night.
According to SUNY Morrisville, students who have been removed from Onondaga and South Halls can go to the Rec Center, where food will be available. All other students can eat at the Seneca Dining Hall.
“All of a sudden we heard the alarm saying this is a lockdown, that there is a shelter in place, and that this is an emergency,” Paige Novak, a SUNY Morrisville student, told CNY Central. “It’s one of those things that you hear about that you think will never happen to you.”
The NYSP is conducting the inquiry in collaboration with university police and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
A command post has been formed while law enforcement works to process the site and search the surrounding areas.
Members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), Uniformed Services, Special Operations Response Team (SORT), and K9 teams are also on location to help with the investigation.
SUNY Morrisville warned the campus community to be prepared to observe and be instructed by law enforcement officers.
The NYSP informed PEOPLE on Monday evening that there were no new developments in the probe.
New York Governor Kathleen Hochul stated on X that she has been briefed about the shooting.
