A Wisconsin lady is accused of bludgeoning her mother to death in a horrific event.
Carrie Zettel, 64, was killed in her Milwaukee home’s backyard earlier this month in an alleged attack that left her “brain matter visible,” according to a search warrant, CBS 58 and Local 12.
Local 12 cited a warrant obtained by WTMJ.
Lauren Spors, identified by numerous local newspapers as Zettel’s 29-year-old daughter, was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide on October 12, according to online court records obtained by PEOPLE.
Loretta Moyer, Zettel’s close friend and neighbor, said there is a history of suspected violence by Spors in the family, according to CBS58.
According to online court records examined by PEOPLE, a domestic abuse restraining order was sought and approved against Spors in a “family case” in February 2018.
Moyer told CBS 58 that Zettel had long assumed Spors was involved in her father’s 2018 death.
In a restraining order petition acquired by the site, Zettel stated Lauren “struck her father repeatedly on [his] head with heavy decorative bottles.” Lauren also allegedly “threatened life with a knife” after the assault.
According to CBS58, during the 2018 proceedings, Spors told the court, “I haven’t accepted my father’s death. My mother claims I killed him, but I don’t recall doing it.”
According to the medical examiner’s report quoted by CBS 58, officials subsequently determined that Jeffrey’s death was unintentional since he had a history of overmedicating.
Lauren was also charged with misdemeanor violence and theft in June 2020, according to online court records seen by PEOPLE; that case was dismissed when she was deemed unable to stand trial.
Zettel is known for her bright personality and concern for others suffering from mental illnesses, according to her son, who spoke at a recent memorial for her.
She was affectionately known as “Grandma Carrie” by children and was famous for her unique cheesecake-like dish, friends said at the vigil.
“She was always there for the children,” Jordan Wake said.
According to online court documents, Lauren’s first-degree intentional homicide allegation in connection with Zettel’s death contains a modifier of domestic violence – threat, but no plea is indicated.
A lawyer named as representing her in the papers did not reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
