Las Vegas Man Opens Fire in NYC, Killing Four — Including Off-Duty Police Officer

A Las Vegas man has been identified as the gunman behind a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in New York City that left four people dead and another critically injured on Monday, July 28. One of the victims killed was an off-duty NYPD officer, according to authorities.

During a press conference held at Weill Cornell Medical Center, the NYPD confirmed that the shooter was Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, who had a documented mental health history.

What Happened During the Shooting?

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, surveillance footage showed Tamura exiting a black BMW double-parked on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets, carrying an M4-style rifle. He entered the lobby of the high-rise building alone and immediately began firing.

He first shot an off-duty NYPD officer, then turned and fired at a woman hiding behind a pillar. He moved toward the security desk, where he shot a guard taking cover. Another man in the lobby was also injured by gunfire.

Tamura then entered an elevator, where he let a woman exit safely. He went to the 33rd floor, home to Rudin Management, and fired more shots, killing another person. He then walked down a hallway and shot himself in the chest, according to Commissioner Tisch.

Authorities confirmed Tamura acted alone, and there is no active threat to the public.

High-Profile Building Targeted

The 345 Park Avenue skyscraper is home to Blackstone Inc., the NFL headquarters, law firm Loeb & Loeb LLP, KPMG, and other top firms. While it is unclear if Tamura was targeting a specific office, the motive remains unknown.

NYPD Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

One of the victims was Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer who served in the 47th Precinct. Islam was 36 years old, a father of two, and his wife is expecting their third child.

Mayor Eric Adams paid tribute to Islam, calling him a hero and a true representation of New York’s immigrant spirit. Islam, originally from Bangladesh, had served with the department for three and a half years.

“He protected New Yorkers,” Adams said. “He was a person of faith… He embodies what this city is all about.”

Commissioner Tisch added, “He died a hero.”

Other Victims and Ongoing Investigation

The other three people who lost their lives have not yet been publicly identified, pending family notification. One victim is in critical condition, while four others suffered minor injuries while trying to escape the scene.

KPMG, one of the building’s major tenants, released a statement:
“Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement.”

As investigators continue searching for a motive, the city mourns yet another tragic case of gun violence in a location considered one of the busiest and most secure business areas in Manhattan.
