A 43-year-old Illinois man, Daniel N. Pace, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after he was convicted of dousing his ex-girlfriend in vodka and setting her on fire. The attack, which occurred in August 2022, left the victim with severe burns covering nearly one-third of her body. Pace’s actions were deemed “exceptionally brutal or heinous,” and the judge handed down the maximum sentence for his crime.
The Brutal Attack
The attack occurred on August 19, 2022, at the Landmark Apartment Complex in Peoria, Illinois. Pace and the victim, who had been in a relationship, got into a heated argument. During the altercation, Pace grabbed a bottle of vodka, poured it over the victim’s head, and then flicked a lighter twice, setting her on fire. The victim suffered horrific injuries, including third-degree burns covering 19% of her body. Prosecutors reported that 30% of her skin was burned, with extensive physical and emotional damage.
Impact on the Victim’s Life
The victim bravely shared a victim impact statement during the sentencing hearing, which was read aloud in court. In her statement, she explained the profound effect the attack had on her life. As a result of her injuries, she lost two jobs and may never be able to work again. She continues to struggle with daily pain from her burns and the emotional trauma caused by the attack. Additionally, the victim expressed difficulties with trusting others, explaining that the attack had a lasting emotional toll that continues to affect her life.
The judge, Stephen A. Kouri, was visibly moved by the statement and expressed strong condemnation of Pace’s actions. “I think that Mr. Pace is an incredibly violent person,” Kouri said. “In all my years as a judge, I have thought it but never said it. I think that you are an incredibly evil person. I think we need a break from you.”
Pace’s History of Abuse
Pace’s actions were not isolated. Prosecutors revealed that he had a history of abusive behavior, having hospitalized the victim at least once every month during their relationship. Additionally, after setting her on fire, he kept her locked in the apartment for four days, refusing to allow her medical attention. However, the court found this explanation insufficient and convicted him of aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery.

Judge Kouri sentenced Pace to the maximum possible prison term of 60 years. Under Illinois’ “Truth in Sentencing” laws, Pace will be required to serve at least 85% of his sentence, ensuring he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
