Mike Psillakis, the twin brother of Mercury Psillakis, who was tragically killed in a shark attack at a Sydney beach on September 6, paid a deeply emotional tribute to his late brother. Describing Mercury as “his right-hand man,” Mike shared on Instagram that losing his twin was “the hardest moment of my life.”
Mike expressed the profound bond they shared, writing, “He was my Ying, I was his Yang . He was my mirror, my blood, my DNA. We were telepathic. We share the same soul. Mercury was my life, my right-hand man.” He continued, saying they had an unspoken connection, even sharing the same dreams and experiences. The bond between the two was truly inseparable.
Tragic Shark Attack Incident
On the morning of September 6, emergency services were called to Long Reef Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches after reports of a shark attack. Mercury, 57, had entered the waters around 10:00 a.m. and was attacked by a large shark, estimated to be about 12 feet in length. The shark bit Mercury multiple times, severing several of his limbs. Despite efforts to bring him to shore, Mercury succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
The incident occurred about 30 minutes after Mercury had entered the water, approximately 100 meters offshore. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mike Psillakis’ tribute to his brother emphasized Mercury’s zest for life. “He was passionate … the life at every party…” Mike recalled, adding that his brother’s message to all was to live life with pure passion. Mike also highlighted Mercury’s love for his wife Maria and daughter Freedom, urging people to offer support to his surviving family during this difficult time.
In a statement from Mercury’s family, they described him as a “hero” and “devoted husband” to his wife. “This is a statement that is so hard to write, as there are no words that can describe the amazing, humorous, and beautiful man he is,” the family said. “Unfortunately, this was a tragic and unavoidable accident. We are devastated by this loss, but will forever carry his spirit, energy, and joy in our hearts.”
