A serious security incident in Florida has led to federal charges against two siblings after an explosive device was discovered at a major U.S. military base.
Explosive Device Found at Air Force Base
Authorities say 20-year-old Alen Zheng is accused of placing an improvised explosive device (IED) at MacDill Air Force Base earlier this month.
The base is a key military location that houses major operations, including United States Central Command (CENTCOM).
According to federal prosecutors, the device was planted near a visitor’s center on March 10.
911 Call and Discovery of Device
Officials say Zheng himself called 911 to report the explosive device after placing it. Initial searches did not find the device immediately, but it was later discovered on March 16 in a secluded area by a service member.
Authorities have not confirmed a clear motive for the incident.
Sister Accused of Helping Him Escape
Zheng’s sister, Ann Mary Zheng, has also been charged in the case. Prosecutors say she helped her brother avoid law enforcement and assisted in destroying evidence.
Both siblings allegedly sold the vehicle used in the incident and fled the country to China shortly after the device was planted.
Arrest and Charges
Ann Mary Zheng was arrested after returning to the United States on March 17. She now faces charges of assisting after the fact and evidence tampering.
Meanwhile, Alen Zheng remains at large and is believed to still be outside the country.
Serious Federal Charges
Alen Zheng faces multiple serious charges, including:
- Attempted damage of government property using explosives
- Making a destructive device
- Possession of an unregistered explosive device
If convicted, he could face up to 40 years in prison.
His sister could face up to 30 years if found guilty of the charges against her.
Ongoing Efforts to Locate Suspect
Authorities say they are actively working to bring Alen Zheng back to the United States. Officials have stated that all possible options are being explored to locate and arrest him.
