Phoenix, Ariz. – Jurrell Davis, 36, and Jechri James-Gillett, 18, have been arrested and charged with the murder of Zariah F. Dodd, a 16-year-old pregnant girl, and her unborn child. The victim’s body was found fatally shot in a park last month, sparking a detailed investigation by Phoenix Police.
Crime Details
On July 5, at around 6 a.m., police responded to a report of “unknown trouble” near 55th Avenue and Osborn Road. Upon arriving, officers discovered Dodd, unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency personnel later declared her dead at the scene. An autopsy confirmed that Dodd was approximately 22 weeks pregnant at the time of her death, and the unborn child was also confirmed dead.
Arrests and Charges
After an extensive investigation, authorities identified Jurrell Davis as the father of Dodd’s unborn child. He, along with Jechri James-Gillett, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of both Dodd and her unborn child. Davis faces additional charges, including sexual contact with a minor and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
The investigation revealed that Dodd had left her group home in Surprise, Arizona, on the night of July 4, planning to meet with Davis. Evidence indicated that Davis picked her up that evening, shortly before her death.
Legal Proceedings and Prosecutor’s Statement
During a court appearance this week, Deputy County Attorney Ashley Stetson revealed further details of the case, stating that Dodd had been about to undergo a forensic interview with investigators who were looking to charge Davis with unlawful sexual conduct for impregnating her. Additionally, DNA tests confirmed that Davis was the father of the unborn child.
The victim’s father expressed his disgust over the situation, particularly regarding the age difference between Davis and his daughter, calling the situation traumatizing. However, he also shared that he was relieved to see the arrests made and emphasized his commitment to seeking justice for his daughter and granddaughter.
Bond and Court Dates
Jurrell Davis is currently held in the Maricopa County Jail on a $1,025,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 11. Jechri James-Gillett is held on a $1 million bond, with his next appearance set for Thursday.
The tragic deaths of Zariah F. Dodd and her unborn child have shocked the community, and both Davis and James-Gillett face serious charges as the investigation continues. The case has highlighted the dangers of domestic violence and underage sexual exploitation, and authorities are working to ensure that justice is served.
