Iranique Nyesha Martin, 38, from Florida, faces charges of child neglect after allegedly leaving her 3-year-old daughter alone in a car outside Crunch Fitness in Sweetwater, Miami, while she worked out inside.
The Incident
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, the incident unfolded on Saturday when a man approached a police officer on patrol outside the gym and reported seeing a young child left alone in the backseat of a car.
The man mentioned he had observed the same child alone in the vehicle the previous day, which prompted him to alert authorities again.
Upon further investigation, police found the car running with the girl inside. Iranique Martin eventually exited the gym and confirmed that the child was hers.
When questioned about her time inside, Martin reportedly said, “Yes, I was using the restroom,” suggesting that she was in the gym for just a few minutes.
Discovery and Alleged Neglect
Officers opened the car door to check on the child and noted that while the girl appeared unharmed, she was unrestrained and not in a car seat, which is a clear safety violation for a child of her age.
Surveillance video later showed that Martin was in the gym for about an hour, during which she exercised and even took a shower.
Police stated that due to the child’s age and inability to care for herself, leaving her alone in the car created an unreasonable risk of harm, leading to the charge of child neglect.
Legal Proceedings
Iranique Martin was arrested and taken to Miami-Dade jail, where she was held on a $20,000 bond. The child was placed in the custody of her father, according to the affidavit. Martin’s next court date is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
Community Reactions
This case has raised concerns about the safety of leaving young children unattended in vehicles, particularly when temperatures can quickly become dangerous. Experts emphasize the importance of ensuring that children are properly secured and never left alone in cars, even for short periods.
