A North Carolina man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he opened fire on a car carrying his girlfriend and her friends—allegedly after a prank led him to believe she was cheating.
Prank Sparks Dangerous Confrontation
According to court documents, Shyhied Ivey, 20, became enraged after his girlfriend and her friends staged a prank suggesting she was being unfaithful.
On April 4 around 11:30 p.m., the woman and four friends were at Camp North End in Charlotte before heading to the 2700 block of Columbus Circle. While there, the woman and a male friend allegedly decided to trick Ivey by having the friend call him and pretend they were together.
Suspect Allegedly Pursues Vehicle
Authorities say Ivey, who had access to his girlfriend’s location, began following the group as they drove away. He allegedly tailgated their vehicle on Berryhill Road, drove recklessly, and called his girlfriend in an angry attempt to get them to pull over.
At one point, the woman reported seeing Ivey fire what appeared to be a handgun into the air.
Shots Fired Into Car
Police allege that shortly afterward, when the group stopped at an intersection, Ivey pulled his black Nissan sedan alongside their red Nissan Altima and fired three shots into the vehicle before fleeing.
Traffic camera footage later captured what authorities described as “three bright bursts” coming from the suspect’s vehicle, shattering the windows of the victims’ car.
No Injuries Reported
Despite the gunfire, authorities said no one in the vehicle was physically injured.
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department met with the group shortly after the incident and began their investigation.
Arrest and Charges
Ivey has been charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, domestic violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on April 23. Authorities also noted that Ivey has a prior felony conviction, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
