A Tennessee man is facing multiple serious charges after authorities say he set his mother and her home on fire following an eviction dispute.

Suspect Accused of Arson and Attempted Murder

Dustin Tayler Machen, 32, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated arson, aggravated burglary, and interference with a 911 call, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

He is currently being held in the Washington County Detention Center without bond.

Fire Engulfs Home

Deputies responded early Thursday morning to a home on South Pickens Bridge Road after receiving reports of a fire.

When they arrived, the house was already fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities say the victim, who made the initial report, identified her son as the person responsible.

Alleged Attack During Eviction Dispute

According to investigators, the incident stemmed from the mother’s attempt to evict her son from the home.

Officials say Machen left the residence but later returned with a container of gasoline. He allegedly poured the fuel on both his mother and the house before setting them on fire.

Authorities say the victim was attacked as she tried to escape the home.

Victim Escapes and Calls for Help

Investigators allege Machen destroyed his mother’s cellphone in an effort to prevent her from calling 911.

Despite that, the woman managed to escape the burning home and reach a neighbor’s house, where she was able to contact emergency services.

She suffered burns to her arms and was transported to a local hospital. Her current condition has not been released.

Arrest and Ongoing Case

Deputies located Machen nearby and took him into custody. Authorities say he was found in a field watching the fire.

Investigators also used a drone to locate a backpack containing his personal belongings.

Officials noted that Machen has prior charges related to domestic violence involving his mother.

Next Steps

Machen is expected to appear in court as the case moves forward.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather details about the incident.
