A 24-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide after she drove her minivan into an assisted living facility in Knoxville, killing a 96-year-old resident. The tragic incident occurred early Saturday morning, leaving the community in shock.

The Crash and Tragic Death

At approximately 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, the Knoxville Police Department responded to reports of a crash at Shannondale Assisted Living Facility on Middlebrook Pike. Upon arriving, officers discovered a minivan had driven completely into a room of the facility, striking and killing the occupant, later identified as Walter Humphrey, 96.

A photograph from the scene showed the minivan inside the building, having shattered the brick wall and displaced objects in its path. There were no skid marks around the crash site, suggesting that the vehicle may have been airborne before crashing into the building.

The Driver’s Actions and Arrest

The driver of the vehicle, Eleasah Williams, was removed from the minivan and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. After her release, she was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide with recklessness. She was booked into the Knox County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

Court records revealed chilling details leading up to the crash. Police were first alerted by a call from an apartment complex reporting a domestic disturbance. According to the call, Williams was “suicidal and homicidal” and had expressed a desire to kill herself and others. Further investigation revealed that Williams had taken several prescription medications and smoked a THC vape before driving at an excessively high speed. She later admitted to attempting suicide and driving recklessly across four lanes of Middlebrook Pike before crashing into the facility.

The Impact on the Community

The sudden and tragic death of Walter Humphrey has left the community shaken. Local residents expressed their sorrow and extended their prayers to the family of the deceased and the Shannondale community.

“We hate it for our neighbors and for our friends across the street at Shannondale,” said Troy Forrester, the lead pastor at Middlebrook Pike United Methodist. “We love all of those folks. Our prayers are extended to him, his family, and all of the residents of that area that were affected by this tragedy.”

Another local resident expressed deep sympathy, calling Humphrey’s death a “tragic” loss, particularly for the family who had entrusted his care to the facility.

The incident has deeply impacted the Knoxville community, particularly those connected to Shannondale Assisted Living Facility. As Williams faces charges for the fatal crash, authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
