Pieces of body': Man charged with murder in cold case from 2021 confesses, according to officials

Cherokee County, South Carolina (FOX Carolina) – According to officials at the 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, a man is being probed for a death that occurred in 2021.

Deputies said John Lucas Rice, 21, was accused Friday with the murder of a man who went missing in late 2021.

Rice was denied bond during a hearing on Saturday evening. FOX Carolina was the sole news station present at the bond hearing.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said that on August 22, they got information from the Spartanburg County Cold Case Unit about a missing individual, Kevin Scott Brookshire. According to investigators, Rice allegedly showed someone a decomposing body in a trash bag in the rear of a residence on Robbs School Road.

Deputies said they went to the home the same day they received the information and utilized cadaver hounds to locate human remains. The coroner later identified the remains as Brookshire’s.

Officials claimed that searching Rice’s social media helped deputies locate further information and critical evidence about the witness engaged in the investigation. According to officials, Brookshire disappeared in December 2021.

Officials said that after speaking with witnesses, deputies located many pieces of Brookshire’s body in various locations.

Deputies claimed Rice was apprehended in Shelby, North Carolina. Rice admitted to the murder during an interrogation with deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said Rice waived extradition and was taken into the Cherokee County Detention Center on Friday.
