Prior to his arrest on Friday, former NBA star Patrick Beverley allegedly beat and threatened the life of his 15-year-old sister, according to a probable cause document acquired and reviewed by PEOPLE.
According to paperwork filed in Texas’ Fort Bend County court on Friday, Nov. 14, his sister informed authorities that the incident occurred after she returned home from a visit with her boyfriend. Her mother, Lisa Beverley, allegedly invited her daughter’s boyfriend into the house, where she claims the former NBA player reprimanded his sister for “leaving the residence without permission.”
According to the police affidavit, his sister claims that Beverley, 37, “grabbed her by the neck with both hands” and “picked her up off the ground.”
Beverley also allegedly gripped his sister’s neck, “causing her to feel pain,” according to the records. She allegedly informed cops that she felt like she “was losing oxygen and not able to breathe.”
According to the records, Beverley allegedly choked his sister’s neck for 20 to 30 seconds before transporting her from one room in the house to another “by still holding her neck.”
Beverley allegedly “began to slam her body against the walls of the residence, and was still holding her by the neck,” his sister informed police, adding that she tried to free her brother’s grip by seizing his wrists.
According to the affidavit, the former NBA player, who was recently called out by Klay Thompson for comments about Thompson’s girlfriend Megan Thee Stallion, allegedly laid his sister on the sofa before “stood on top of her, and punched her approximately one time on her left eye with a closed fist,”
According to the affidavit, Beverly’s sister said that their mother, Lisa, remained in her bedroom during the reported attack.
A final item in the affidavit is that Beverley reportedly told his sister that he would “be the family relative to kill her” during the assault.
“I understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story, given at a time when emotions were high,” Beverly’s attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, told PEOPLE. “As I’ve said before, we don’t believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete.”
“Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night,” the statement read. “In fact, he was quite respectful to the authorities that night and encouraged others to do the same. He is the provider and defender of his family, which includes his younger sister and his mother. He has always cared for their well-being and will continue to do so. I am confident that Patrick will be vindicated of these charges once all of the facts are established. Until then, all I can ask is that everyone have an open mind and not jump to conclusions. Please remember that this is America, and Patrick is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.”
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department arrested Beverley on Friday on a charge of allegedly injuring a family or household member in a way that impeded breathing or circulation, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE. TMZ was the first to disclose the news.
According to court documents, he was released later that day after posting $40,000 bond.
Following his detention, Beverley stated, “Please do not accept everything you see on the internet. “I hope everything is fine, Luv,” she wrote in a post on X.
“Patrick Beverley has no criminal history. “He cares deeply about his little sister, a young lady, a minor,” Quinones-Hollins stated in a statement to TMZ, which was also placed on Beverley’s X page. “Given that, when he unexpectedly discovered her alone in the house with an 18-year-old male in the middle of the night, he was understandably anxious, as any brother would be for his sister. However, we do not believe what followed occurred in the manner portrayed, and we look forward to the opportunity to address this in court.”
