Vincent Zappa, 26, has been sentenced to between 18 and 30 years in prison for severely beating his girlfriend’s 8-month-old baby, causing a brain bleed. Zappa was convicted in January 2026 of first-degree child abuse by a jury in Macomb County. The incident occurred in October 2024 when Zappa was babysitting the infant while his girlfriend was at work. He called 911, reporting that the baby was “not acting himself,” prompting emergency responders to rush the child to the hospital in critical condition.
Details of the Abuse and Medical Findings
When medical professionals evaluated the child, they discovered a severe brain bleed (acute subdural hematoma), along with bruising on the baby’s head, neck, and chest. The child also had more than 100 retinal hemorrhages and was bleeding from the mouth. Experts testified that the abuse had long-lasting, devastating effects on the infant. Zappa’s actions were confirmed by multiple physicians during the trial, leading to his conviction. The defendant underwent a psychological evaluation to determine his criminal responsibility.
Sentencing and Future Restrictions
In addition to his lengthy prison sentence, Zappa is prohibited from having any contact with the victim or the victim’s family. He will also be required to register as an offender under Wyatt’s Law, a state database for those convicted of crimes against children. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido praised law enforcement and medical professionals for their efforts in securing justice for the child. The case highlights the continued commitment to protecting vulnerable children in the community.
