Robeson County, North Carolina – A suspect engaged in a gunfight with Robeson County officers was found dead during a standoff, according to Sheriff Burnis Wilkins’ office on Thursday.

Deputies, the North Carolina SBI, Hope Mills police officers, ATF and DEA agents, and US Marshals executed a search warrant in the 400 block of Ice Cream Drive in the St. Pauls neighbourhood at 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office. When they arrived, the suspect emerged from the trailer with a rifle and fired several bullets at the detectives.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, fled back into the camper as investigators returned fire, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities attempted to contact the folks in the camper for over an hour before deploying tear gas.

A woman exited the trailer, and when officials arrived, they discovered one suspect dead and another in jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate the shooting. No other information was immediately provided.
