Melissa Joann Dunham, 40, of Florida, is accused of intentionally setting fire to her former family home in Homosassa after a heated argument with her estranged husband, even though she had moved back in to celebrate their son’s 18th birthday and try to “rekindle” their marriage. She has been charged with arson and is being held in Citrus County Jail without bond.
How the fire started
The blaze broke out shortly before 10:30 a.m. one Monday in the 4900 block of South Powell Point. Citrus County Fire Rescue found the house “heavily involved in fire” and took about an hour to fully extinguish it. Investigators said evidence pointed to the fire being deliberately set.
When officers arrived, they saw Dunham sitting outside the burning home with a bottle of lighter fluid, which they treated as a key indicator of possible involvement. Shortly before the fire, her husband had gone to his car to charge his phone; he heard her yell, “Now we don’t have s—,” and then noticed the house was already in flames.
Family tensions and background
Their 18‑year‑old son, whose birthday was March 17, told police the couple had been separated for some time but Dunham moved back so they could celebrate the milestone together as a family. He said she hoped this would restart the marriage. Instead, the couple quickly resumed arguing, with Dunham upset that her husband was too busy to spend time with her.
The son told officers he had decided to move out that morning because he didn’t want to be caught in what he described as a “toxic” relationship. The night before the fire, Dunham allegedly took a hammer and punched several holes in a wall, signaling growing frustration.
Legal status
Dunham was taken into custody and questioned by detectives; key parts of her statement to police are redacted in the arrest affidavit. She is currently imprisoned at the Citrus County Jail without bond, and her next court date is scheduled for April 13, when the case will proceed toward a determination on the arson charge.
