A Minnesota man is facing serious charges after authorities say he shot a teenager in retaliation for a fire he blamed on the boy’s father.

Teen Seriously Injured in Shooting

According to police, Gyaw Way, 61, allegedly shot a 17-year-old boy in St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers responded to a home on Hoyt Avenue East around 3:45 p.m., where they found the teen in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, with an exit wound through his back.

Authorities said the bullet caused severe injuries, including damage to the liver and lung and broken ribs. The teen is expected to survive but will require extended hospitalization.

Alleged Motive Tied to Previous Fire

Investigators say Way believed the teen’s father was responsible for a fire last year that killed his own son.

However, reports indicate the fire was ruled accidental and likely started near a space heater.

Suspect Allegedly Lured Victims

Police say Way invited the teen and his father to the home under the pretense of repaying a debt.

When they arrived, Way allegedly entered their vehicle and shot the teen at close range. Witnesses inside the home reported hearing the gunfire.

Behavior After the Shooting

Authorities said Way returned inside the home after the incident, where he allegedly lay down on a couch and appeared unconcerned.

According to investigators, he made statements indicating he did not care about being arrested.

Arrest and Charges

Way was taken into custody and charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm.

Police also allege that his adult son attempted to hide the weapon used in the shooting.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Way is currently being held in the Ramsey County Jail on a $200,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 13.

The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather details surrounding the incident.
