A Washington state mother is facing serious criminal charges after prosecutors allege she fabricated an elaborate story to cover up her infant son’s death from fentanyl exposure.
Safarah Red, 33, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the 2024 death of her 11-month-old child. Authorities say the case involves not only fatal drug exposure but also an attempt to mislead investigators with a false account of an assault.
Alleged 911 Call and Initial Claims
According to court documents filed in King County Superior Court, Red called 911 around 2 a.m., reporting that her son was not breathing. She told dispatchers that the situation stemmed from an assault that had occurred hours earlier at a Seattle light rail station.
Red claimed an unknown man attacked her, forced a white substance into her mouth that “tasted like fentanyl,” and may have exposed her child as well. During the call, dispatchers noted that she sounded intoxicated and appeared unable to follow CPR instructions. Instead, she repeatedly apologized while her child remained unresponsive.
Police Response and Discovery
When officers arrived at Red’s apartment, she allegedly refused to open the door, forcing police to break inside. They found her inside, visibly distressed and crying.
Her infant son was discovered on a mattress and was already dead. Authorities noted the child was “cold to the touch,” indicating he had been deceased for some time.
Surveillance Footage Raises Questions
Investigators say surveillance footage contradicts Red’s account of events. Police were unable to locate any video evidence placing her at the light rail station during the time she claimed the assault occurred.
Instead, footage from her apartment complex shows her returning home with her child and behaving in a calm manner. Prosecutors allege she was seen “singing and dancing,” which they argue is inconsistent with her claim of a recent violent attack.
Allegations of Evidence Disposal
Authorities also point to suspicious behavior during the 911 call. Surveillance video reportedly shows Red discarding two trash bags down a chute while still on the phone with dispatchers.
The contents of those bags were never recovered, but investigators believe their disposal may have been an attempt to conceal evidence.
Medical Findings Suggest Ongoing Exposure
An autopsy conducted on the infant revealed levels of norfentanyl that prosecutors say are consistent with chronic exposure to the drug, rather than a single accidental incident.
This finding directly challenges Red’s claim that the exposure occurred during a one-time assault.
Prior History and Warnings
Prosecutors say Red had a known history of fentanyl use and had previously been investigated by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families.
In November 2023, a social worker reportedly warned her about the dangers of fentanyl exposure to children. At the time, Red acknowledged the risks and showed investigators safety measures, including Narcan supplies and a lockbox.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Authorities allege that Red went to great lengths to construct a false narrative in order to deflect responsibility. Prosecutors argue that despite prior warnings and available support services, she placed her child in a dangerous environment.
Red is currently being held in King County Jail with bail set at $500,000. She is scheduled to return to court on April 28.
